INSTITUTIONAL LAUNCH EVENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL CARTOGRAPHIC CONFERENCE
On monday 25th of May, 2009, an event was held to launch ICC 2009, held in
the Military School in Santiago, which is also the venue for November's
conference. The launch was attended by about 70 people invited from key
institutions in the Government, Armed Forces, Academic and Media/Press
sectors, among them a Government Minister, the General at the head of the
Chilean Army and other leading authorities.
The formal part of the event consisted of two presentations to the
audience in an auditorium chamber. The first, from General A.C. Kehr of
the CIMI,
introduced cartography and its importance. Then Colonel Juan
Vidal presented the ICC 2009 conference itself, outlining its purpose,
schedule and significance, also emphasizing the importance of the
participation of public, state, scientific and private bodies. Colonel
Vidal is Director of the Military Geographic Institute of Chile (IGM), the
local organizer of ICC 2009. (The IGM, the CIMI (from which the IGM
depends), and the Military School are all part of the Chilean Army).
The event served to promote involvement in ICC 2009 at national level and
also to train key personnel for management of the coming event in
November.
