Technical Visits

The LOC for ICC 2009 will offer three technical visits to take place during the conference to some institutions involved in geo-information. To go on a visit, the cost of the trip should be paid (separately from the cost of registration for the conference).

The visits are:

Geographic Military Institute (IGM)

IGM The Military Geographic Institute (IGM)is the official authority representing the State in all matters involving geography, cartography, and surveying of its territory.

The IGM is the permanent information service in everything concerning the geography and cartography of the country. Historically, the IGM satisfies all needs concerning the Basic Territorial Information (ITB) of the nation.

The IGM manages the cartographic coverage at 1:50,000 scale available to the community in paper or digital format. At present, the IGM is undertaking various projects in order to respond to demand for more detailed cartography.

The Aerophotogrammetric Service (SAF)is the technical and official authority of the State that fulfils needs for remote sensing, aerophotogrammetry, and similar techniques, as well as the standardization and creation of aeronautical cartography and all related maps.

All this in order to contribute efficiently to aeronautical safety, to defence and national development through images and territorial data. Basically, the mission of the SAF is the collection of data, which will be strengthened by the recently inaugurated High-Resolution Satellite Earth Station.

The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy (SHOA)is the institution belonging to the Chilean Navy whose mission is to ensure safety in navigation around the coast and Chilean territory through cartography of the sea, rivers, and lakes.

Since the 19th century, it has been in charge of the creation of nautical charts in the country; however, it broadened its role in the 20th century. Nowadays, it draws the nautical charts of all the territory, conducts research, and publishes documents about tides, seaquakes, ocean currents, astronomy.

Also it controls the official hour of the country. The SHOA is the institution in charge of giving first alerts in case of a tsunami. It has modern facilities, state-of-the-art software and the most modern printing techniques in the country.
