Background Information for Abstracts

This document aims to provide general guidelines for the Abstract of a Paper or poster, given the special role this plays in the performance of the Conference.

The abstract fulfils a critical function, as it constitutes the only element by which the scientists and professionals who act as reviewers within the Scientific Sub-Committee of the ICC 2009 can judge the quality and suitability of the work presented, while at the same time helping to guide the scheduling of these presentations into the various technical sessions to be held during the Conference.

For this reason, whoever submits a presentation (Paper or Poster) into the Scientific Management System of the Conference should take care to be sure that the abstract enables readers to find and distinguish the following aspects:

The identification of the issue (introduction), providing background information enabling a general approach to the objective and the field it develops in.

Motives (objectives) which the performance of the project or activity (described in the conference paper or poster) intends to respond to or fulfil.

Focus (methodology) by which the project or activity was performed.

Results achieved by the performance of the project or activity.

Conclusions that report the benefits yielded (to those sciences related to cartography) by the project to be shown through the paper or poster.

Together with the above, other requirements should be taken into account, in consideration of the format to be complied with:
- It has to be sent by electronic mail through the interface of the Submissions system, in Microsoft Word file format.
- The number of words in a Paper Abstract should be between 500 (minimum) and 1,000 (maximum).
- The number of words in a Poster Abstract should be between 300 (minimum) and 800 (maximum).
-  The work presented in the system must be original and previously unpublished.

The Scientific Sub-Committee of the ICC2009 appreciates and values your effort involved in the presentation of a paper or poster for the Conference, whilst also recommending you to consider the aspects stated above for the submission of the Abstract; since this enables each one of the presentations (papers and posters to be entered into the submissions system) to be assessed fairly.
